What Is Parents as Teachers?

Parents as Teachers is an international early childhood parent education and family support program serving families throughout pregnancy until their child enters kindergarten, usually age 5. The program is designed to enhance child development and school readiness through parent education accessible to all families.

As a Parents as Teachers family, you receive:

  • Personal Visit—During these visits, certified parent educators share age appropriate child development information with parents, help them learn to observe their own child and address their parenting concerns.

  • Group Meetings—Here you get an opportunity to share information about parenting issues and child development. Parents learn and support each other, observe their children with other children and practice parenting skills.

  • Screenings—PAT offers periodic screening of overall development, language, hearing and vision. The goal is to provide a clear understanding of your child’s growth and development.

  • Referral Network— PAT helps families link with other community services.
